Challenge
A payment network operated without centralized merchant category code guidance. The MCCs were defined, but not centrally managed and updated.
Because of this, partners across the ecosystem applied MCCs inconsistently, each interpreting codes differently based on their own understanding. As a result, internal teams lacked a unified reference point, leading to conflicting guidance and operational inefficiency. The absence of clear standards created friction at every touchpoint.
The core need: A definitive reference that would establish network-wide consistency and eliminate operational ambiguity.
Solution
We created comprehensive MCC documentation, designed to serve as the authoritative reference for the entire network ecosystem. This comprehensive guide was established based on comparing every single MCC code used within the organization. We also conducted a comprehensive study on MCCs used within the industry and used this to compare it with our client’s documentation, and to update their MCCs.
1. We started by understanding what works across the industry:
2. Then, we built a guide that covered the full scope of the network's needs:
Results
The MCC Guide transformed merchant categorization from a source of inefficiency into a foundation for consistency. The guide became the vital reference point the ecosystem needed.
On the surface, it might appear that an MCC Guide addresses mere merchant categorization. But you see that beneath that, it is a complex web and essential guide to transaction routing logic, interchange optimization, compliance frameworks, regional regulatory variations, and merchant experience design.
